Awkwardly Ary

Hey I'm Ariana. I'm a tall Studio TV major who lives in Boston. I'm a nerd who sometimes produces and lights things. I once lived in a 14th century castle in Europe. It was awesome. This blog is stuff I like.

To my followers, this is about a safety class I need to PAY for (a small amount but still) to get modules…to take a test…to take out equipment.

Also, I am coming from working at the college in an environment that safety is key. I also am the equipment manager at an organization that I pride in making a safe environment. These thoughts are my own and not a reflection of my employer or organization.

First off, I am all about safety on set and in studio. It’s super important. So important that we should have been including it in curriculum from the start. Have our professors TEACH us about safety since we are already paying thousands of dollars to learn how cameras work. Part of how they work is the safety that comes with them. This is their job. We’re already paying them.

We also need to reverse the mindset of our generation thinking that we are invincible. Cause we’re not. That’s another whole aspect we need to deal with when it comes to safety. Watching some videos is not going to help that and taking a test is not going to help that. Plus I suck at tests but I know when I’m not supposed to do something dangerous in the studio.

I understand that people have gotten severely injured on set and in studio. That’s because they don’t teach us, they just let us run wild with the equipment. We need hands on safety demonstrations for things like jibs and glide cams, our professors need to scare us into being safe, and they should be the ones instructing us.

People won’t study for this and then they will fail and when they do they will get equipment somewhere else (orgs or outside vendors) or under someone else’s name.

It’s not about the stupid $4 or $7 I have to pay to get these videos. It’s about the way the department is approaching this really difficult subject. I think we should rework the curriculum instead of shoving a test in our face.

Safety is costless and priceless, VMA department. And before pressing the students to do this, make sure the faculty does it to.

One final thing, VMA isn’t the only department to take out equipment from the EDC. They should take this test too.
